The mind is not a monkey

“as water flows down a slope in a natural way, so the mind flows naturally in the direction of bliss” - Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

The mind is always searching, always wandering toward that which is blissful, stable, and enduring. It often gets a bad rap.

We blame it for overthinking, looping, persisting.

We label these tendencies as flaws of the mind itself or our own personality flaws.

But what if overthinking and endless thought cycles are simply the effects of an overactive nervous system, not the mind’s fault at all?

In Vedic Meditation, the mind is understood to be made of pure consciousness. It’s like a wave that appears separate for a moment but ultimately collapses back into the ocean of consciousness.

Yet most of the time, the mind forgets that it is the ocean. Instead, it takes its identity from layers of stress, fatigue, and impressions. And this is the state in which most modern minds are operating.

When the mind is seated in itself, at home in Being, it doesn’t wander, and it doesn’t loop.

It becomes powerful, creative, unbounded and expanded. It can perceive the wisdom and direction of nature in every moment.

A mind attuned to the bliss of Being within is profoundly different from one caught in stress-driven identity.
